Molodets Aliya!!!

On behalf of myself and every fan who reads this blog I would like to extend the warmest happiest most joyous blessings to Aliya Mustafina, who is due to give birth to her first child in July. This is such a bittersweet moment for me as I watch one of my idols graciously transcend to the next stage of her life. The mama of the team is about to really become a mom!

I remember a particular interview where the befuddled journalist asked her what else she could hope to accomplish in her life after becoming an Olympic and World Champion by 20. Her smile was polite as she remarked that she would like to be a mother one day. In western society (represented by prevailing reactions last year/this year), the idea that women choose to place motherhood on an equal or higher pedestal than their career is met with mockery, sometimes even hatred. For me, it comes down to personhood and choice, and Aliya has always been frank about wanting to engage with the nurturing side of her character. Furthermore, neither she or her family worship sports so I expect this child will rightfully take priority over whatever choices she makes regarding gym (and that is fine with me). Ultimately, everything I ever wanted for her has come true: she is healthy. She is happy. She is satisfied with how her career went. She is universally recognized for her meritable contributions to Russian gymnastics and sport. From my perspective, a baby is just another blessing to call her own. So with that in mind I hope for a healthy term and safe arrival of the child. I think Alexei should be home by summer to welcome the birth of his first child too

One last thing.

They don't know the sex of the child yet but if it's a girl, Aliya honey, you just messed up . You want your child to be a rhythmic gymnast yet you disadvantaged her thus? Do you have any idea how haaaaaard it is for a new senior to break through in a post-Olympic year...in RG? Well, there's Kudry. And if anyone can do it again it would be your child. Girl or boy, that's some amazing talent genes being passed down. Molodets to the happy couple.

  1. Not so fast says Valentina Rodionenkova. Also she says that Aliya's due will be in june and that( it scandalous tbh) Aliya will come to full training in National team at round lake in the end of the year LOL! http://www.sport-express.ru/artistic-gymnastics/news/gimnastka-mustafina-i-bobsleist-zaycev-zhdut-rebenka-1085584/

    1. lol that woman.

She overestimates Aliya's sense of duty to the team. How would Aliya be back by the end of this year when she never planned to train for the first two years of this quad, with or without a baby?

    2. Technically it was Valentina who first told to press that after Rio Aliya will take a break, but Aliya by herself only told in some interviews that she will take a break, but how long it will be she never-ever certain... Btw even now Aliya often visite girls at round lake, Valentina know very well Aliyas value in the team.

  5. A baby musty - I can't wait . I know everyone disses Valentina but she would be first in line to hold the baby 6 hours per day if Aliya were to return . It is great for the sport for this to be even a possibility .

  6. As a mother, (yes we are all different) work comes 2nd after you have a baby (esp. your first) if money is not an issue, most mothers choose to stay home to see every little thing they could potentially miss whilst sending their child to daycare, a grandparent, relative, or sitter. I was lucky enough to stay home, now my daughter is in Kindergarten, I have no plans to go back anytime soon (I had a wonderful career as a guidance counselor at a great High School). I am sure one day I will return, but not in the forseeable future. All the best to the new Mrs. I hope she has a healthy happy little baby. Whatever she decides I know it will be for the best interest of her new family.

    1. Thank you for this perspective. I know Aliya can still make another Olympics but how crazy is it that eleven minutes after her announcement her coaches are trying to shift the focus back to the gym? LET HER ENJOY HER MATERNITY. If she wants to return she will do so. Aliya herself probably doesn't even know the answer to whether she will return or not, even if she currently feels inclined to give it a go. A baby changes everything they say...

  7. Most Russians become mothers at 19-24 & Valentina has previously stated gymnasts can be top level at 25 .Now they are adding that they can be mothers also .It is great .

Aliya is still employed as a gymnast & receives no doubt some handy benefits for a young couple .Now she has fuly paid maternity leave .

I saw some vids of Aurelia Dobre doing some gymnastic moves with her 4 teenage sons - wow she still had it at 40+. I know Aliya will keep in shape & I like the idea that we may , just may , see her compete again. It is all good .

    1. You bring up some good points. It's nice that mature women are considered worthy and relevant to gymnastics, especially since it was Russia that introduced little girls/little bodies into the sport. When I think about it that way, I like that Aliya is still a part of the conversation!
