Viktoria Komova Faces New Injury

On the eve of her second AA comeback, Viktoria Komova has informed us through her VK that she is on her way to the hospital because of a back injury so she'll miss Russian Nationals. I hardly knew what to feel when I read the news honestly. Sadness, certainly. This girl will never be given a prolonged moment of health for her to actually improve, will she?

This whole situation does remind me of a concern I had in 2014 and some of 2015 that her chronic pain would always return so long as she tried to raise her level of difficulty. If she was just a BB/UB specialist or nature had made her a mediocre all-arounder only capable of 55's, she might not put any strain on her body, but so long as she's trying for ambitious things like DLO's and amanar's she would always get reinjured. This was just a thought back then but now I think there's truth in it. We will soon know the extent of the injury and whether her prospects for Rio remain manageable. It recalls to my mind one of her interviews (I think after Baku?) where she said she no longer feels sorry for anything that happened to her because negativity and victimizing herself led her to subconsciously attract new injuries that kept her from competition. Vika, I'm so sorry this is happening to you; you have been so mature and happy in your return to the sport and you will definitely come back stronger than ever from this.

  1. I agree completely. Vika is completely capable of winning Gold on Beam and UB. I feel as if putting all this pressure on her to upgrade is doing her in. In order for her to get on that AA podium she will need an Amanar and a strong floor routine that must score over a 15. In 2012 she could do this easily. I wish the Russian Camp would stop putting so much pressure on her to compete AA. I pray this is just a minor injury and she can recover quickly.

    1. I don't think anyone is putting pressure on her to compete AA...she has said numerous times that AA is her goal and what she wants to work towards. But otherwise agreed.

    2. AA has been our second most obvious weakness this quad, after FX. Without Aliya medaling in 2013, and putting up a fight in 2014, we'd have had no prospects at all in the category. It's putting a lot of pressure on all the girls to step up (though Vika has always stated she is first and foremost an all arounder so I don't think she was forcibly coerced into returning to AA). Russia has now gone two years without an AA medalist and it makes one worried about what to expect in Rio, doesn't it? But we must wait and see what Aliya, Vika, Melka, Seda, and Kharenkova look like before any final pronouncements are made on the matter. Among this group is so much potential for greatness, but 'potential' could be thought of as raw talent that needs time to hone skills into a mastery level. And time is not on Russia's side.

  2. I completely agree that it’s her own decision to compete in AA, there is no need of that. Speaking of injury, I know how problematic it can be. My brother had a similar one and got it treated from a Mississauga chiropractor. Thankfully, it got treated well in time.
