I'm a happy stan. I think I'll log out now to finish my depressing article on the men and then write something short and sweet about the woman. Cheers. (Oh also sorry for not talking about any of the other teams- you would think only Russia and Ellie were competing- but when I wasn't watching Russia I needed to devote all my energy to praying for them so i missed A LOT.)

Crazy as it seems we are in 1st on two apparatus for now. And Lena's 13.233 on beam doesn't seem... so bad anymore?  Only two beam routines are in the 13's and there were some great D-scores and hits out there so...maybe... two EF's for her?!?! Can a girl dream

Paseka still in first on vault [with room for improvement].

Olsen has no amanar apparently... but a nice DTY! Cheng gets no lift but somehow she wraps it around. The controversy is that she's not actually doing a cheng b/c there's no half on block so it's easier for her. It's a quarter entry block which is unfair in the extreme.

Lena.Is.A.Bars.Queen.

Come to think of it, Ellie Black only performs with this spark at home. Canada needs to send a bigger support contingent to foreign Worlds me thinks. She thrives in this atmosphere. Great vaults, almost stuck.

Jeezus that was beautiful from Ilya. Close catch on the ezhoza . 15.066.

15.10000 MY QUEEN

HOT DAMN LENA YASSSS GIRL

Haha Melks ties Nina. Russia reigns supreme!

Nice UB from Gelya. It's been a struggle for her this year so it's a nice end to her day.

BLESS:
All I want is a Lena-Ilya 1-2 ranking.

All three Canadians will compete 2 vaults which impresses me because even America only has one vault specialist and most countries have none.

Paseka at her haters rn:

Me at Paseka rn:

Paseka took my advice (yes she reads my blog obvs) and went for her hardest vaults. Now she can confidently go into finals knowing she can hit them and what she needs to improve on. 14.933 average with a 15.0 for her amanar and a 14.866 on the cheng!

Guys. GUYS.

Brooklyn Moors is also behind Frags. This comp is crooked.

Huge dty for Melka just a step back: 14.4 for that. Lopez for a 13.833, didn't see it heard she stepped one foot oob. What's the point of this tho? It's not even Euros where you could pretend she has a chance.

Clean 1.5 for Lena. 13.833. Good girl.

13.433 for Ellie. How was Frags better than that? I didnt see the D.

Ellie Black has great presence and manifests the same power in her tumbling in her dance. There's nothing light about her movements which I hate but I appreciate her investment in choreography. She always has nice routines. I just wish someone with technique and gorgeous form was performing them.

Ellie avenge her!

Shallon Olsen: stuck but low on the silivas, dbl tuck, stuckish piked full in and triple! No artistry but that's to be expected. It was a nice routine for other reasons. Crowd loves it. I'm hyped cuz theyre hyped lol. 13.133 too low.

It's ugly but interesting and some parts are pretty. All of that.

Belgian fx is umm...interesting

Paseka with the bangin warmup vaults tho

This should be a good rotation with Canada on floor. And Paseka emerges.

Eremina's coach is shaking her shoulders to release the tension. She looks pensive. Halfway thru the comp, let's hope she's got all the jitters out. And that she vaults a 1.5 pls god.

And get that effing camera out of her face!

Expect an  Instagloom post.

It's not the end of the world to pull her from a comp til she's worthy of showing routines ya know. Especially when there was a girl ready and willing to replace her, smh. She's out there feeling bad for letting her coach down but what has she shown tonight that's any different from what she did in training since the injury? They knew what to expect.

They always set her up for failure and destroy her confidence.

I can see Melka crying.

Brooklyn Moors does a lovely attitude turn on beam. That is all.

It's ironic that in the home of the perfect ten we're witnessing so much fugnastics.

Valentina is gonna have to open a podcast to vent her full wrath

Wait a minute. Ellie Black killed that routine but only scored two tenths higher than Elena. Can Lena still make beam finals then??? It's up to how strict judges remain I guess.

Melka: too much momentum on dbl arabian, Whippy dlo but stuckish, hands down on piked full in. She's gassed. And yep there it goes, rolls to her butt on the dbl pike. 11.166

12.8 for Lena's fx. Kill me. It's probaly fair (I cant see the triple from this angle) but kill me anyways.

Gosh Lena's fx is so boring. Change it. She hits but she's oob on her second pass. The triple was low. Not sure if it was completed. And...she needs some dynamism in those tumbles.

12.6 for Melks btw. She went overtime. And hurled forward on the dismount.

7.3 E-score for Melks. I'm desperately trying to tell myself that things will remain fair in later subs.

She had better form as a junior. Shame what nerves have done to her. But I'll take it!

Melka is wobbly on everything. Her form on the layout is crunchy and lacking amplitude & shape, but hey, at least no fall.

She's so nervous. I'm so nervous. Are you nervous?

She wasn't credited her ring connection and she didn't do her aerial to scale combo. But I'm glad that she got the nerves or the adrenaline out of her system. She survived. To survive these Worlds is to win at this point.

5.4 D, 7.83 E for Lena. Hmm. Let me try to be objective rn.

13.233 for Lena

I was so nervous my hands shook capturing this image.
I was so nervous I held my breath through her choreography.

Lots of nice gymnastics on but I'm too invested in Russia. I'm overwhelmed lord help me.

Judges taking a long time...

Jeezus Redeem Us. Lena Hit!!!!!!!

Btw, I'm nervous.

Sherina Elzeiny of Egypt has nice stage presence. And very dramatic music.

I'm so nervous.

Nina Darwael (BEL) just scored a great 14.966 (6.3 D). Lovely swing.

Logging in for the start of Sub 2!

  1. Love the blog! Delighted Melks posted decent scores on vault and bars after very nervous opening.

  2. that was a roller coaster. whew. Shades of Rio where if that last bars rotation hadn't happened I'd be a lot gloomier. I feel for Melka but that floor disaster wasn't at all surprising. Lena I thought looked extremely nervous, especially on floor, and I'm proud of her for making it through without any falls.

I don't mind the beam scores as long as they keep it consistent tomorrow. I think the beam judges were harsher than we've come to expect on everyone except Derwael (I don't buy that her execution deserved to be nearly half a point higher than anyone else's without the fall), but mostly consistent. Maybe a little home scoring, nothing egregious.

  3. IMO Gelya’s floor problems are (at least partially) due to injury, not headcasing. Her first fall was a weird bounce forward with one foot, and she did the exact same thing at the end of her beam routine even though she normally has one of the best double pikes in the world, the only difference was that she managed to stand it up on beam but put her hands down on floor (maybe because she'd already jarred her foot with her beam dismount). Maybe I'm reading into it too much but it is an unusual-ish stumble (which I don't think I've seen her do before), and she did it twice, plus she said her injury hampered her.

The second fall might have been due to foot pain but I think it was just nerves/disappointment with herself after the first fall and of course Russia being Russia…

For me the positive take away is that if she can/does hit floor in the all-around her score should go up by 2.4 (literally just removing the two falls and the penalties for out of bounds) which should be very encouraging for her. It would have given her an all around score of 55.532 today even with the mistakes on beam putting her less than .3 behind Ellie Black who pretty much had the perfect day.

Even more encouraging is the fact that Gelya was able to pull herself back together after making big mistakes when usually she seems to just give up/descend into a pit of despair. Seeing her fight back from tears after floor to finishing well on vault (lets ignore the lopez cause tbh it doesn't even matter and i hate the fact the coaches have her vaulting it here with an injured foot) and bars.
