WAG Podium Training
Hey guys, I'm just compiling what I've found on the net, so you don't have to look in every which direction for news.
The girls rotated in their qualifications order, so they started on beam. Let's go:
Spiridonova - ff layout step out, ring leap, Onodi, front aerial wobble, fall on side aerial, full twisting ff, round off back tuck dismount…. Made full set on her second turn, with double tuck dismount!
Melnikova – double wolf turn, layout two-feet with a wobble, front pike, sheep jump, 2 ½ wolf turn, big double pike over rotated! Fell on her second layout two feet!
Tutkhalyan – Round off layout two feet, switch to switch half, round off layout full (fall), front aerial, switch leap, full-in pike put her hands down but it had good height; made her second full-in
Mustafina – double turn, wobble after a jump combo, side somi, switch side to Onodi, side aerial, front aerial to front aerial, switch leap, round off back tuck;
Mustafina second turn – good double turn, jumped off after her side aerial, then repeated it and wobbled…
Spiridonova – ff layout, switch leap to leap ring, Onodi, front aerial to sissone, side aerial to full turn, full turn leg up, switch ring – much better turn from her!
Melnikova nailed layout two feet this turn, front pike stuck too… front tuck to a jump – getting instructions from her coach and does a 2 ½ wolf turn, double pike after that step back on the landing – she is so clean! Looks like that hamstring injury really has healed a lot!
Solid turn from Mustafina – double turn, two front aerials in a row, easy double tuck with good landing!

PT went as well as could be, the girls did the best they could, and just need some cleaning up. Mustafina showed two upgrades which she's been hinting at for a while, a whip on FX and her old E rated eponymous dismount on UB. Even without these upgrades, she would still qualify for AA but every tenth inches her closer to an AA medal. Tut is still unstable on beam, falling on the layout full and full in dismount with hands down, so even though she got back up there and hit two more times, I think she is the difference between a medal or none for Russia. She also needs to not be mediocre on floor, and it sounds like her PT routine kinda was. Well, she shouldn't do her best work before it matters [but I'd prefer for this one to train like every time was a competition, ya know?] Melka was good across all events and replaced her switch ring with a second wolf turn. I just realized she's been getting credited a 6.1 at Euros so I'm not sure she will make the BB ef any longer; she's more hesitant since her injury. Paseka was stellar, knocking out the amanar and cheng, but I'm sure you've heard her adversaries have upgrades. I'm surprised she didn't do UB! Daria was as she always is, great on bars (I thought she was a little loose on the handstands) and meh on beam. I think Russia will score lower in quals than they will in TF's. All in all, the majority of this team consists of very level headed individuals, with specialists who excel on their pet events and AAers who have the right difficulty to make our team competitive.

With Paseka having back problems it's smart to keep her reps to vault, that's where they need her. She's also not been as sharp on bars this year so they might as well let Seda do it, although I wonder if they'll pull Seda if she somehow knocks out one of the Ms.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had more video! I don't trust IG to necessarily tell the difference between a maloney and a komova, but if they're correct that's a big upgrade for Aliya.
Interesting thoughts. So their quals would be UB: Seda, Melka, Aliya, Daria? For some reason I never thought of Seda, although hilariously I still had Seda doing AA...like duh she's doing bars, dumb-dumb. But you're right, Paseka has done 1.5 bar routines this year and it wasn't great. I wonder if Seda will go safe for quals; on the one hand she needs her full difficulty to snag an AA spot, but on the other hand her execution turns rough with the 6.5, and she might lose more than the d-score gained.
DeleteRe Aliya; i can sort of believe she would have the Komova II only because she's been consistently saying since 2015 that she's training something harder since she knows her d-score won't cut it for the Olympics. But then again, she said she doesn't expect she will get a gold medal anywhere (and these are more recent words) so maybe it is the maloney...
If she can get a 9+ execution she can win a medal, I think. Her best intl scores, to date, are 15.5 so with even a tenth more in difficulty, she's right in the hunt for a medal. Crazy how we only have ONE 7+ UB at the Olympics.
Yeah I think if she does show up with a 6.8 she should medal and can even possibly snag gold since Fan's routine has several spots that can get big deductions depending on the day. And I agree it was obvious the seitz wasn't coming back (</3) so the komova II was the likeliest thing she was training....I just don't want to get too excited when the person doing quick hits could have easily gotten that wrong.
DeleteI guess we'll have to wait and see! I'm so nervous I don't even think I'll be able to watch their quals session.
So nervous for the girls! I'm just praying for no falls in TF. Any color medal for Aliya is a bonus. Melnikova for AA bronze? Paseka bronze vault! Spiri Gold bars! Seda ... Hmm Seda.. Just don't fall !
ReplyDeleteeveryone keeps saying Melka for AA bronze, but what about Aliya who has the best execution and consistency? Great dty, killer bars, fantastic beam, and a floor routine that receives 8.5 e-score no matter where her difficulty is. If she can get that 15 on beam like at Euros, she'll probably count 15 on three events, and now that she's going for a 5.9 on fx, she'll probably score a 14.2- 14.4ish there, so that's extremely competitive. It will be better for our girls if the second American is Douglas, not Raisman, because Gabby- while clearly more even as an all arounder- does not have the boost of an amanar nor does she have 6.7 fx, so Aliya can equal Gabby's program. Unfortunately I think Raisman will qualify for the aforementioned reasons (her gymnastics is not my cup of tea so im saddened) in which case Aliya has a better shot of trying for a silver or bronze over Melka.
DeleteAly and the Americans can't compete with the lines and grace of the Russian girls. Aly and Hernandez are very strong but not my cup of tea. Simone is fun to watch though. Kyla Ross was beautiful to watch.
Deletedoes Paseka has strong chance to win gold in vault??? same question for Spiri in bars?
ReplyDeleteyes, her start values are equal to Biles, her execution is less crisp (particularly on the cheng) but she's improved a lot since Russian Cup and is landing them easily. With clean stuck vaults she will definitely outrank Steingruber and all the women competing produnovas! The only real competition she has besides Biles is Hong Un Jong's attempt at a triple yurchenko. So far Hong is not landing them in training, but she only needs ONE lucky landing in finals to take gold away from Masha. She's 100% going for that triple in finals. Other great vaulters are Ellie Downie and Rebecca Andrade, but neither girl has the combined difficulty to contend with the top 3 vaulters in the world.
DeleteDasha's chances at gold are good but not strong. It could happen, but not without help from her competitors. Her d-score managed silver at Euros and now she has to contend with upgraded Germans who weren't in Bern, Americans, and Chinese girls (in particular Fan Yilin, the only healthy Chinese gymnast at the moment). Her execution will keep her in the medal hunt but she always executes the same way, so there's not really any massive room for improvement in her score. It seems the judges are content with sticking her at 15.3- 15.4. Another thing to consider is Madison Kocian, who had the highest e-score from finals and now has the same start value as Daria, so that could be the difference in medal color between them. I never agreed with Madison's score last year but this year she's looking slightly improved and has the momentum of domestic overscoring to sway the international panel. And finally there's Aliya, who executes better than Daria but always was disadvantaged with a lower d-score. She's either at a 6.6 or 6.8 now, so yeah, it's not looking great for Daria...
Paseka has no chance at gold unless Biles falls.
DeleteMaroney did
DeleteSpiridonova gold in bars? no way, No with Aliya having a 6.8, Fan with a 7.1. If these made big mistakes, she still would have to fight against Downie, Daerwell, Chunsong, Seitz and Kocian. UB EF is gonna be the most competed aside vault.
ReplyDeleteI hope they can somehow get a Team Medal.
