David Narrowly Misses Bronze

"The excitement and nerves were even stronger than the team final!" -David. Let's all give a hearty round of applause to Russia's two all arounders, David Belyavskiy and Nikolai Kuksenkov, who finished in fourth and thirteenth respectively in the most amazing all around final since Miller vs. Gutsu circa 1992 (for real tho). David, I am so happy to see you continuing to smash it in the All Around! I feel it's been such a long time since you've had a bad AA performance, thus I'm positive this stability indicates domination of many future World podiums. And as you yourself said, fifth in London, fourth in Brazil...surely the prize waits for you in Tokyo. Take pleasure in having an error free competition and do not worry about what you could've done differently. You added difficulty because you saw how tight the competition was and these last minute alterations deserve respect and admiration, for all gym fans know how hard it is to compete adequately on something untested. We are so proud to know you can challenge with the best of the All-Arounders. I also want to notify readers that extra congratulations are in order as David proposed to his girlfriend right after the team final in front of cheering onlookers and his mates...she said yes! Wow, these Olympics hold so many special moments for him. Great job David, now refocus your energy and go for the gold on parallel bars!

Unfortunately, an early fall on pommels (13.3) left Nikolai having to play catch up for the rest of the competition, and with a sore shoulder still recovering from a minor injury, he wasn't quite up to the task. Nik told reporters "I was afraid because the second apparatus was rings and my shoulder is still aggravated but I coped with the competition and overcame the negative." Yes he did, and to end with 87+ after that first rotation speaks to the potential he had for a medal. Take vengeance on the pommels in the finals, Nik!
The top 8 all did very well. A final for posterity.
