Kapitonova has a floor routine very reminiscent of what FX looked like for the Russians last quad, very pretty and very whimsical. Seems effort was actually put into her choreography. Once she evolves into a performer, she won't be so "boring" to us, but I'm honestly enjoying watching her as she is now. She has a 5.8 d-score without the mustafina turn and has been training the triple twist with the hopes of adding it into her routine permanently this summer. For me, it's just nice to see a Russian not having an asthma attack after performing on floor

At the Euro Games in Baku, Seda said she was pleased with reaching her first 14 on bars at an international meet, and now look who's getting deserved marks in the upper 14's! The issues were there- short handstands and a problematic dismount that'll never be easy to stick- but her swing was the best in the entire field and her newest element, the bhardwaj, looked crisp and effortless. Just like Kapi on FX, Seda didn't do everything in her repertoire; the church to pak was missing, meaning we might see even higher scores from Queen Tut later this season! I'm pumped!

Kapi missed what should've been an easy gold for her but everyone's allowed to have an off day on their pet event. A reliable gymnast in general, she's shown her most impressive consistency on UB, so I'm not worried about a bad day still scoring mid 14's.

I feel like singing Celine Dion's 'A new Day Has Come' because both Russians hit beam, hallelujah amen thankyoujesus&buddha. However... I am not feeling blessed when I look at Seda's leaps. Her e-score could be three tenths higher if someone at Round Lake would just fix her back leg extension. Oh, it makes me cry. Then again, her e-score was also the result of a few wobbles and her dismount can't be ignored either. Kharenkova redeemed herself after a botched qualifications, but I'm not convinced she's undone the damage to her chances of making another international assignment. It's a shame because at her best she is usable on three events (which is more than some members of the Euros team can say), but the current team strategy is a conservative one so girls like Tut and Masha are the inevitable losers. Anyways, Masha was excellent on beam, I truly loved every moment of it, all she needs to fix is the speed of her connections and she'll be at 6.5.

The girls were TERRIFIC, and mind you, they all scored 14's on everything in finals. Excellent results, girls, just excellent.

  1. Aw, who's picking on Kapi? Her floor seems so well suited to her and I love that she's up to a 5.8 now given what she was tumbling just a year ago! Also, she's wearing one of my all-time favorite Russian leotards :)

Have your thoughts on the Euros team changed? I want them to send Seda instead of Ksenia for sure, and maybe Kapi instead of Spiri as well. Aliya & Angelina should be there since the Rio team will probably be built around them, and Paseka as well since nobody else can contribute her vaults. If she's having trouble competing them this year and Russian Championships weren't a one-off, it's best to find out now.

    1. Commenters here and there have described her as being both pleasing and boring. Honestly, if Aliya was doing this routine people would be gushing so I think it's partially that Kapi still hasn't had her breakthrough with the mainstream gymternet. Nevertheless, Kapi can improve on expression and performance quality. It's the old conflict of presentation (Vika) vs. presence (Aliya). For now, she has the former, but the potential is there to have both.

The team you named is EXACTLY the team I would send. I wouldn't mind replacing Spiri with Masha/Kapi either. It's a great balance of youth and experience, but when each girl does her best, they all perform with maturity and confidence.
