World Cup Guadalajara

From the 3rd to 5th of June, Spain will host its first World Cup series and is celebrating its inauguration with a killer international roster. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Bulgaria (among others) are sending nothing but their top gymnasts. Finally Rita, Yana, and Sasha will compete against each other in the same competition. Technically, they did all compete at Nationals but Yana pulled out. Sasha can't afford to lose any of the momentum she's created since she is the "upstart" who dares to unseat the traditional order of things. Her victories have made Viner take notice, but right now her status is more of the wildcard than someone considered a permanent fixture on the team. With every victory she is changing that perception, and putting a dent in Viner's plans, but to secure a Rio berth she will need to win at Guadalajara [or at least be the second best]. In other words, prove that her victories have not been a mastery of luck. Prove that she can win when BOTH girls are on the mat with her. Rita and Yana might be the traditional front runners for Rio but more than pride is on the line for at least one of them if they don't beat Soldatova. RG is rarely this exciting but I'm so nervous for each of them, it feels like the Hunger Games...

  1. Personally I think Viner is going to pick the two as late as possible...like in 2012. I'm half expecting her to take all 3 of them to Rio and make the final decision there. I think this will definitely decide which two get to go to Euros though, which will give them a significant leg up.

    1. Oh definitely, Viner is the queen of intrigue, she would do something like that. Tbh, I would love for two of my faves Maria Pavlova and Ekaterina Selezneva to go (just to make it interesting) but that's beyond dreaming. It has been too long since something unpredictable happened at the Olympics in RG.
